D-4 Language and training visa

D-4 is the visa for training that does not award a degree. Korean language courses at university language institutes are the most common case.

Who this applies to

Anyone taking a non-degree course, typically at a university-affiliated language institute

What to know

  • The main sub-codes are D-4-1 language training, D-4-6 foreign language training, and D-4-7 primary and secondary schooling.
  • No degree is awarded. If you want a degree you later change to D-2 and enter a degree programme.
  • The hours allowed for part-time work are narrower than on D-2.
  • Attendance is monitored closely. Falling short affects extensions and status changes directly.

Common questions

Can I work part-time during a language course?
Yes with a permit obtained in advance, but for fewer hours than degree students. In some cases you must complete a set period of study before you can apply, so check the timing early.
Does finishing a language course get me into a university?
No. You apply and are admitted separately, and then go through a status change to D-2.

Take care

Attendance becomes an immigration matter. Missing classes at a language institute is not a small thing.
